Describe what is actually painted
Identify whether the foam will touch painted roof decking, wall sheathing, studs, or a rim area. Photograph the whole receiving area and details of peeling, chalking, blistering, glossy layers, or previous patches. Record known repainting dates and products if available.
A painted stud beside unpainted sheathing creates two receiving surfaces in one cavity. Ask the installer to address both. A successful bond on nearby bare lumber is not evidence about the coated member.
The damp-wood guide addresses moisture readiness. Painted surfaces can need that check as well as a coating assessment.
Distinguish foam adhesion from paint attachment
There are two separate questions: how the foam bonds to the coating, and how the coating remains attached to the wood beneath it. Ask the assessor to describe which interface a proposed check examines.
If an old coating is loose, covering it does not document the soundness of that layer. Record the extent of visible defects and ask whether preparation, removal, a different receiving layer, or another insulation approach is appropriate. The choice should be tied to the actual assembly and product instructions.
Get a product-specific preparation answer
Provide the foam manufacturer with the available coating information and photographs through the contractor. Ask for the relevant current application instructions, any additional preparation requirements, and the method used to assess uncertain adhesion.
Huntsman’s linked ProSeal instructions note that adhesion can vary with paint type. That supports asking a coating-specific question; it is not a universal preparation recipe. Do not choose sanding, solvents, or primers merely because they appear in another product’s manual.
Resolve old-paint disturbance before preparation
EPA’s lead guidance addresses renovation in pre-1978 housing. Where that concern applies, establish the appropriate assessment and lead-safe work arrangements before coating disturbance. Have the responsible contractor explain how occupants and adjacent areas will be protected.
Do not turn “roughen the paint first” into a casual weekend task. Surface preparation can be a separate work scope with its own cleanup and release decision. The older farmhouse wall guide addresses the wall’s wider moisture and paint history.
Keep an adhesion decision sheet

| Question | Record to request | Unresolved condition to mark |
|---|---|---|
| What is the receiving layer? | Material and coating identity where known | Unknown paint or multiple layers |
| What is visibly sound? | Coating-condition photographs | Loose, blistered, or deteriorated areas |
| What preparation is approved? | Written product-specific direction | Unconfirmed primer or cleaning method |
| How is suitability assessed? | Location and result of approved assessment | Test on a different surface |
| Who accepts the area? | Named reviewer, date, and limits | No documented decision before spray |
Use separate entries where coating conditions differ. One wall number with several photographs is easier to review than a message saying “paint okay everywhere.”
Define a representative trial before broad coverage
If the manufacturer or qualified reviewer calls for a trial, agree on the location, conditions, evaluation method, and restoration of the trial area. The installer should explain why it represents the receiving surfaces elsewhere.
For example, a trial on a recently painted repair panel may not answer the question about older glossy framing two bays away. Record the difference and ask whether another assessment is needed. Avoid improvising a homeowner pull test that leaves a damaged area with no repair plan.
Include the edges and planned finish
The painted surface may stop at framing joints, roof connections, or previous repairs. Have the installer identify how the complete insulation and air-sealing detail connects across those changes. Adhesion on a flat sample does not describe every transition.
The uneven corner guide helps document coverage near framing. The before-drywall review keeps the final surface record alongside product and preparation records.
Compare alternatives before the substrate is hidden
Ask for the complete cost of approved preparation, installation, assessment, and restoration. Compare that scope with a proposed alternative assembly if coating suitability remains uncertain. A low foam-only price may exclude the work that establishes a usable receiving surface.
Keep the decision and photographs with the house records. The old-house wall without sheathing guide covers another situation where the substrate itself changes the project. The answer should fit the wall you have, rather than treating every open cavity as the same installation.
Questions homeowners ask
Can foam stick to paint but still detach from the wood?
Should I sand the paint before the crew arrives?
Does a trial on bare wood approve the painted areas?

- Spray Foam on Damp Wood: Checks Before Installation — Before foam covers damp framing or roof decking, document the water source, wood condition, moisture readings, and the exact product’s application requirements.
- Uneven Spray Foam in Wall Corners: How to Document It — Ridges and shallow corners need a location-based review. Record specified coverage, measured thickness, framing edges, and the contractor’s repair verification.
